Harmonisation of European contract law and legal translation: a role for comparative lawyers
2007
The problem of harmonizing the contract in Europe has caught the interest of law professors, researchers and the European institutions. After years of debates, the European Union is aware that a lack of uniform legal terminology prevents any kind of unification and harmonization of European Contract law. The need for a uniform legal terminology clashes with the multilingual legal terminology of European law. In Europe there is not just one, but many legislative and administrative languages, and each of them is an official language of the European institutions. In accordance with the principle of linguistic equality, the European Community (EC) recognizes that all legal instruments have to b…

Assessing EPAP lexical features: A corpus-based study
2018
The features of specialised languages have been extensively described by scholars in the literature. Amongst them, Enrique Alcaraz’s work stands out as an exhaustive and comprehensive description of EPAP at all linguistic levels: lexical, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. This research aims to provide a bottom-up assessment of his description on a lexical level through the implementation of corpus-based techniques on two specialised corpora of legal and telecommunications English. The results support Alcaraz’s portrayal as regards term usage, the relevance of sub-technical vocabulary, the peculiarities of Latin single and multi word terms in legal English and the significant presence and u…
What Gender-Neutral Legislation Owes to Grammar: The Concept of ‘Gender’ in Legal English and the Italian Guidelines for Use of Gender-Sensitive Lang…
2022
Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, genderinclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only. As a matter of fact, languages vary widely in terms of gender systems showing differences in the number of classes, underlying assignment rules and how and where gender is marked. In everyday speech, the word gender is usually associated with the biological and social differences between men and women (as in the case of Italian), and the view that grammatical gender mirrors natural gender is still evident in the terms masculine, feminine, and neuter that are used to label individual gender d…
Immigration metaphors in a corpus of legal English: an exploratory study of EAL learners' metaphorical production and awareness
2017
